Dubai: A City of contrasts
When you think of Dubai what does it call to mind? Sun? Shopping? Skyscrapers? All of those things are certainly present but the big and brash reputation is part of what's making Dubai such a hot tourist destination right now. Dubai's got so much to offer - whether you're here for the culture or the fancy hotels, here's a quick guide to the best of the city:
Sun: The Middle Eastern climate is generally dry and hot. As you'd expect for this part of the world, the subtropical climate means there's not much rainfall to contend with but this can mean it's uncomfortably hot during the summer months, with temperatures reaching 45 degrees! Tourist season from December to March is more bearable, with higher rainfall and temperatures dropping down to around 25 degrees. However it does get colder at night time, so don't forget to take some warm clothing! In terms of making the most of the sun, you'd be best off heading to one of the many sandy beaches Dubai has to offer. Jumeirah Beach is the most famous, offering lots in the way of activities if you get bored of sunbathing, but try Al Mamzar Park for something a little less obvious and (hopefully!) less crowded.
Shopping: An influx of luxury brands have flocked to Dubai, keen to make the most of the monied locals and flush ex-pat communities that have risen up here. You'll find familiar brands such as Gucci, Prada, Marc Jacobs and more. For those that aren't so into their designer goods, never fear, there are an abundance of high street names available here too, and plenty of malls in which to discover new brands. Topshop, Reiss and Zara all have a presence here, so whatever your tastes, you're bound to find something to suit you.
Skyscrapers: Dubai is in the middle of a construction boom but the planners and designers of this city aren't content with simply putting up more buildings -some of the world's most ambitious real estate projects are taking place right here. None more so than the Burj Dubai, which, when it's finished will be the tallest building in the world, dwarfing all others at a height of 818m (the Eiffel tower is 324m). Land reclamation has taken on a whole new meaning in Dubai, with the creation of the Palm Islands, man-made islands that will host a swathe of luxury hotels and residences. With more projects receiving the green light of approval, it's a sure sign that for Dubai, this is only the tip of the iceberg.
