The Old Bodega, La Romana, near Elche, Alicante - Pool - Sleeps up to 7 or more

Nestling under the Sierra d’Algayat, inland from Alicante, Spain, the self-catering accommodation is for up to 7 people.

Breathtaking views - mountains, groves of olive trees, cherry trees and grape vines, and, in the distance, the Mediterranean. Swimming in the pool, visiting local places and attractions, photography, painting, or just reading (or writing) your book - here’s the place.

Self-catering accommodation in a converted bodega (an old wine press and store), about 50km inland from Alicante.

* 3 bedrooms - a double-bed room with en-suite (handbasin, toilet), a bedroom with one single bed and two bunks, and a bedroom with two single beds.
* bathroom (handbasin, shower, toilet)
* kitchen area - cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine
* dining area
* evening area
* outside sitting and eating area, with barbeque
* small swimming pool in secluded garden area, not shared with any other visitors
* car parking right outside
* hardly any traffic anywhere near the house, and none at all in front, ever!
* the only people you might see outside the bodega are us two (your hosts)

Stay a week, a fortnight, a month or longer - rates vary.

The accommodation suits a group size of seven with ease, or more if the younger ones squeeze up a bit.

* No tightly packed crowds of screaming holiday-makers trampling off the beach into the nightclubs. No discos. No football supporters. No coach parties of tourists. No Coronation Street. No Big Brother. In fact, no television of any sort.
* There are mountains, olive and almond trees, grape vines, sun soaked fincas (traditional Spanish farm houses), villages with dusty streets and bakery shops and cafes with locals having breakfast or a menu del dia (very cheap 2-3 course meal).
* Breakfasts in the garden, siestas in the afternoon, and warm evenings around the swimming pool. Perhaps there’ll be a short sharp shower (but with over 300 days of sunshine a year is that likely?) - then it’s back to the sunshine and impossibly blue skies.
* Marble quarries, savouring the almond blossom in the Spring, the occasional small tractor working in the fields across the valley, trailers laden with grapes queuing outside the Bodegas, the occasional flock of goats with their goatherd, breathtaking views of plains, mountains and, in the distance, the Mediterranean.
* Fiestas and carnivals, Christian festivals and historical re-enactments.
* Real shopping in the local markets (better brush up on your spanish) - for water melons, or shoes, or buñuelos de vientes, or wines for less than 2€ a bottle, or paraguayas (a deliciously juicy summer fruit like a nectarine but better).
* Walking up the mountains, down the Rambla, or geocaching in the Sierras.
* Capturing the sunlight back-lighting the cypress trees - on film or canvas.
* Golfing at the Alenda, El Plantio, Campoamor or Villa Martin.
* Listening to the birds in the garden in the mornings and evenings as you read (or write) your book.
* Going for another dip in the pool, and not being splashed by noisy kids (unless they’re yours).
* Cosy off-season evenings in your converted bodega enjoying your paella and Sangria, watching a selection of our DVDs.
* Day visits to the hot spa baths of Fortuna, the castle and sanctuary church and the Art Nouveau house in Novelda, the hermit’s cave at Orito, a massage (less than 30€) at Pinoso, the castle at Sax, the beaches of Alicante and Santa Pola (only 50 mins in the car).
* The cliff village of Guadalest, the pottery at Agost (watching the fifth-generation potter make fascinating pots and figures right in front of you), magical Fonts d’Algar - cascading waterfalls and natural swimming pools.
* Browsing in Aspe, Elche, Jumilla, Yecla, Villena…
* Travelling a few miles to Mundomar - the world renowned dolphin and sea-lion centre, or taking the family to Aqualandia or Terra Mitica, or Valencia or Murcia or Cartagena - all within a day’s travel.
* Not sharing your time or space with anyone else except the other members of your party (- well, you brought them!)
* Want to stay in one night but you’re fed up with cooking? Book a meal from us. We cook it in our home (we live right beside you) then we bring it straight to your table in the bodega or in the garden.
* Want a taxi-driver for the day or evening? We’re right here, just tell us where and when (but we don’t lead or guide you in activities or tours).
* Do you want to be collected from Alicante airport? A hire car is almost essential - except for the most relaxing holiday.
* If you want to go to a church, we can help with that, too. Catholic, Anglican, and varying descriptions of evangelical.
