Holidays at a Mill near Saintes and Rochefort, choice of 5 gites with private pool

The grounds comprise a large walled garden ‘clos’ with lawns, shrubs, rose garden & fruit trees including Plums, Apples, Fig & Cherry, plus an enclosed private in-ground Swimming Pool, childrens rustic playground and sandpit, all fenced off from our shady waterside woodland of Plane trees and little private island…..wild-life, freshwater shrimps and fish abound!  Please note that 2 of our Gites – La Source & La Prairie – are situated on the stream side of the fencing.  These two gites, together with Le Bucher, are all in part of the old Mill building itself; La Terrasse and La Delice du Berger are within a detached, 18th century stone house, covered with climbing roses, just a few yards away.

PLEASE NOTE:  For ALL our clients’ comfort & enjoyment, all our gites are "Non-Smoking" - We have no objection, however, to smoking outside your gite and ashtrays are provided.

This is our ‘two & a half bedroom’ gite, and  overlooks the lawns and  enclosed  pool.  As the name implies, there is a small tiled private terrace with garden table, chairs & parasol plus BBQ of course for outside dining - and enjoying cool drinks on those balmy Summer evenings amongst friends & family!

La Terrasse is on 2 floors – upstairs is a ‘walk-through’ large landing area which is able to accommodate an extra guest on a comfortable sofa-bed, and which doubles as a reading/play area in daytime.  Immediately off the landing is a door into a cosy, twin bedroom with Oak beam across and 2 Solid Pine single beds, built-in wardrobe & chest of drawers with opening window & wooden shutters looking over the fruit garden & pool. 

At top of the Pine staircase and to the left is a spacious room with double bed, large mirrored wardrobe & bedside tables and with a corner vanitory unit with basin & bidet.

Downstairs is the open plan beamed living room in shades of Provencal yellow with a large comfy high-backed sofa & 2 rattan armchairs & a Pine, coffee table and a music system too.  To one side of this room is the dining space with Pine table, benches & 2 chairs and next to it is the well-equipped Kitchen area with high & low cupboards, an electric oven with gas hob & extractor, tall fridge with freezer section, microwave, coffee machine,, toaster, etc. even a garlic press – that most important tool !

There is a doorway on the front and a rear entrance with access to the fully-enclosed raised patio with planters, table, chairs & BBQ shaded by a large neighbouring tree and Wisteria growing across and faces South-West over the gardens & pool.  To the right of the living area is a small corridor to a fully-tiled bathroom with bath, basin & bidet and a separate w.c. There is also a walk-in cupboard housing the top loader washing machine & storage shelving.

All windows have wooden shutters in this gite. 

For off-season visitors, La Terrasse has full electric heating

Aptly named, meaning ‘Shepherds’ delight’ after the proverb ‘Sunset at night, Shepherds’ delight’ ! because of its ideal situation facing South-West, enabling you to fully enjoy the Charentais Summer sunsets from the Veranda which has sliding glass doors to its own enclosed lawned garden & 2 large Cherry trees just outside

This gite is ALL  GROUND FLOOR and fully tiled.

To one side of the veranda is a small shower room and next door a separate w.c.  The veranda is used  as the living room and has a 3-seater sofa & 2 armchairs  and coffee table as well as a music system.  On the right of this room a door leads into a small bedroom with 2 single beds, wardrobe, downlighter and overbed lights and has a large window onto the lawned garden and Cherry trees.

From the verandah a  large, fully glazed doorway opens into the charming open-plan kitchen/dining room, in shades of blue & yellow,  and which has a working fireplace for those chillier days!

As usual the kitchen is fully equipped with new gas oven & hob with large extractor, large upright fridge with freezer section, microwave, coffee maker, toaster plus there is a washing machine too.  On the other side is an Henri ll Oak dining table & matching chairs.

From the the front of the kitchen a further door leads into a large double bedroom with comfortable King-size bed and overhead a coronet Mosquito net – we are not normally prone to this insect, it is merely decorative but functional too ! This room is open to the wood rafters with sturdy Oak beam and interesting downlighting system and two walls are in exposed stonework. There is also a large indoor tree to one corner near to the floor to ceiling glazed windows. Plenty of storage too with a double wardrobe, matching dressing table & small dressers, as well as bedside tables with matching lamps.

Of course, there’s your own enclosed garden with table, chairs, parasol & barbecue shaded partly by the Cherry trees. 

For chillier times, La Delice is also fully centrally heated and has a Charentaise open fireplace.

It is a spacious 2-bedroomed gite with open-plan ground floor divided into Kitchen/diner on the upper level from which a couple of stone stairs lead down to the Lounge which has a small stone stairway leading to the French doors and access to your own decked terrace with table, chairs, parasol and a BBQ.

The Oak kitchen is fully equipped with ample worktop space, electric oven & gas hob, microwave, sizeable fridge, washing machine, toaster & coffee machine, together with an Oak dining table & seating for up to 5 next to the large  window looking over the Millpond and river beyond.  The lounge has a large, comfortable corner sofa suite with coffee table & music system.  All of the groundfloor is fully tiled in shades of pale terracota.

A hand-crafted Pine staircase leads to the 1st floor and onto a landing with a small sofa & table and at the top of the stairs a door opens into the bathroom with corner bath, w.c. and large vanitory unit with spots.  The bathroom also has downlighters. Next to the bathroom is the charming spacious double room with a comfortable double bed & bedside tables, wardrobe & mirror.

is our 3-bedroomed gite and actually sits right on our private island, bordered on one side by the main stream of Le Bruant, and on the other by the millrace which once turned the millwheel itself (sadly removed along with all its ‘ mechanism over 20 years ago!)  It is named for its superb views over the stream towards the Charente ‘Prairie’ – the river flood plain stretching away to the mighty Charente River itself about 800m away.

Our fifth and largest Gite is suitable either for a larger family (We do sympathise….we have six children ourselves!), or for two families sharing. The ground floor, with its’ large open plan kitchen/diner/lounge with dressed stone walls & oak beams is actually in the part of the Mill formerly occupied by the Wheel; so  flowing below it is the Millrace itself and yes…we have put a glass viewing panel in the coffee table with lighting too ! There’s a downstairs Shower Room/Toilet and wooden staircase leading to the 4 first-floor bedrooms, two double bedrooms plus one twin-bedded, and a bunkbedded room, most with beamed ceilings and superb views over either the millrace or the millpond.

There’s also a family sized Bathroom,with corner bath and the Master Bedroom has an en-suite shower with basin & toilet.

The Oak, ' L' shaped fitted kitchen with pink Granite worktops is well-equipped with a double gas oven & gas hob, a fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee machine, but also boasts a dishwasher – hopefully to avoid fights over which family has to wash up!  The dining/lounge area also has part exposed stone walls and we have kept the original beams in all of the groundfloor to retain its character.

A double glazed doorway leads to a decked balcony platform jutting out over the millpond and hence through a ruined wall to an e enclosed gravelled patio with large table, chairs, parasol & barbecue.

Our rentals are per week in £s (Sterling)
and include electricity, water and cooking gas.
