The Area
THE CHARENTE MARITIME enjoys its own special microclimate which makes it the second sunniest (and second warmest) region in the whole of France.
FACILITIES IN MONTENDRE. As would be expected in a town of over 3,000 inhabitants, there are plenty of bars, restaurants, doctors, chemists and general shops. All within 5 to 10 minutes walk from the house.
The Intermarche supermarket, hairdressers, restaurant and petrol station are within 2 minutes walk from the house.
On the edge of town there is a large lake complex which is set in the forest. There is a beach with safe bathing for children. During the summer months this is supervised. There is an equipped playground for children, boats to rent and plenty of space to have your own picnic in the shade of the pines.
Within the lake complex there is a fishing lake and restaurant. And just outside the lake area is a nine hole golf course.
Montendre is surrounded by forest. Being a flat area there are plenty of tracks through the forest where one can enjoy miles of tranquil walks and cycle rides.
JONZAC is a lovely old town within 15 minutes drive of Montendre. It boasts some wonderful architecture and a superb swimming complex complete with beach, wave machine, restaurant and bar.
THE ATALANTIC COAST lies within less than an hours drive. This is the start of some of the most beautiful, clean and safe beaches in France. There are dozens of beaches ranging from small creeks to the large open beaches of Royan. From Royan the beaches stretch all the way up the Atlantic coast.
COGNAC, the home of the most famous names in the making of brandy makes an exiting and interesting day out. You can admire the ancient city, sit & picnic on the river bank or have a guided tour of the magnificent Cognac producers such as Martell and Remy martin (with the usual tastings)
THERE ARE many, many more exiting places to visit such as Auberterre, sSt Emillion, Angloueme, Bourg on the estuary. Bordeaux,...the list is endless. One must not of course forget that this is the centre of one of the largest wine producing areas in the world. The producers are more than willing to invite you to taste their products. Do not forget to try the locally produced Pineau.
