A Holiday Home in Rural Normandy

This charming 18th Century property lies in the heart of the attractive Orne country of southern Normandy. It is situated in 5 acres of policies consisting of orchards, a field and young woodlands with elevated south- westerly views over the lovely countryside

The property was purchased as a ruined farmhouse in 1997 and had not been previously occupied since just before World War II. After eight years of patient restoration it has been converted into a comfortable holiday home properly equipped for modern living conditions while still retaining the property's traditional rural character. It has been designated “Gites de Charme” with an equivalent 4 Star rating by the letting agents.

The house can accommodate 6 guests in three bedrooms (1 with a double bed & 1 with 2 single beds on the 1st floor & 1 with 2 single beds in the attic). An extra fold-up bed can be made available for one more person if required in the attic.

There is a bathroom on the 1st floor with bath, basin, bidet & WC. In the attic there is a shower room with basin & WC & on the ground floor there is a shower room with basin & WC in the kitchen wing

The sitting room which is furnished with comfortable arm chairs & large sofa & is equipped with a TV, music centre & an Hunter wood-burning stove installed in the traditional Norman granite fireplace.

The dining room is furnished with an oak dining table which can seat 10 people with a chandelier above, a traditional oak armoire (private cupboard) & writing table. There is also an efficient Jotul wood-burning stove in the granite fireplace & the oak staircase gives acess to the 1st floor.

In the kitchen there is a breakfast table with 4 chairs. It is equipped with an electric oven & ceramic easy-clean hob plus micro-wave, a double bowl sink unit, a dish-washer & fridge over a 3 drawer freezer. An automatic washing machine is located in the adjoining utility room.

Located in the adjoining barn there is garden furniture with sun parasol & choice of charcoal burning barbecues for use on the extensive gravel terrace in front of the house. The pump over the well is in operation but is only used for watering the garden.

Plunge Pool : A large plunge pool is available to use at a charge of 10 Euros/day by arrangement with the caretaker.

Services : Mains electricity & water, oil-fired domestic hot water & central heating & telephone (00 33-2 33 30 82 11) for in-coming calls only.

Recreation : Apart from walking in this attractive Normandy countryside where there is a network of extensive narrow lanes (“chemin creux”) there are a variety of activities that can be undertaken within a 30km radius – swimming, tennis, pond/lake fishing, horse riding & golf. There are also beautiful gardens to visit within 1 to 2 hours drive.

There is good local shopping at Tinchebray (10km) where there is an excellent supermarket with a very keenly priced filling station. In Flers (25km) there are larger supermarkets & a greater range of shops, restaurants etc plus a weekly market on Wednesdays & Saturdays. Nearby in the village of St Cornier-des-Landes (3km) there is a bakery & an excellent mini-supermarket with its own butchery.

Further a field & within 2 hour’s driving distance there is ample scope for sight-seeing & visiting places of interest on the north coast (1944 invasion beaches) & west coast (Mont St Michel & St Malo). Good golf courses are within a 1 1/ 2 hour’s drive at Granville in the west or Omaha in the north.

There is a good train service from Flers to Paris (3hrs) & the city of Caen is only 1 hour's drive although you should leave at least 1.5 hrs to reach the channel ferry port of Ouistreham. You should allow at least 3 hours to drive to the outskirts of Paris via Caen & then park your car before taking the Metro into the city.

Tariff: The house is available to let from 1st May – 30th September at the following weekly rates for 2007 :

Note :
1. The rates above include the cost of central heating, electricity up to 8kw/hr per day & linen.
2. Two full baskets of firewood can be supplied for 40E(£28+).
3. A returnable deposit of 200E(£140) subject to any breakages or damage is payable to the Caretaker on arrival.|
4. Any cleaning can be arranged with the caretaker on a private basis.

Caretaker: Our Caretaker is Madame Catherine Degrenne who lives in the cottage at the roadside just below the entrance to La Chenaiserie. She is extremely helpful & speaks good English & together with her partner Patrick Manoury will be able to assist you with any problems. Mme Degrenne works full time Monday - Friday mid-day & therefore can only be contacted in the evenings or weekends.
