Holidays in the Dordogne

Recently renovated wing of owner’s medieval house in small village near delightful town of Excideuil in beautiful Dordogne countryside.

Spacious accommodation has been designed & equipped to provide high level of comfort & facilities, sympathetically created to retain the traditional style, including some exposed stone walls & old beams, in an independent wing of the owner’s medieval fortified house, which is believed to have had an association with the Knights Templars, and once owned by Marshall Bugeaud, celebrated hero of France.

There are two bedrooms, one double and one twin. The shower room on the first floor is well equipped, with a separate W.C. The living area of 42 square metres consists of a well equipped fitted kitchen with double sink, gas cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, together with access to a washing machine.

The dining area has seating for six, and there is a spacious sitting area complete with comfortable armchairs, a settee, satellite television (BBC and free to air television and radio) and CD player.

The house overlooks the river Loue in a small village close by a farm and market garden, in a mixed agricultural area with walnut groves, small vineyards and apple orchards, 3 kilometres from the small town of Excideuil, with a chateau dating back to the 11th century, besides which stands a Renaissance mansion which once belonged to the Talleyrand family. There is a complete selection of bakers, butchers, and other small shops with a very well stocked supermarket, and newly refurbished hotel/ restaurant.

There is a good open air swimming pool at Excideuil, open during July and August, together with tennis, and lake swimming at the lake at Rouffiac complete with a sandy beach and pedalos and other children’s entertainments.

Other activities include cycling, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, and golf.

The house is conveniently situated to take advantage of Low Cost Airlines into the airports at Limoges and Bergerac. They are both within 90 minutes drive, and I will be happy to provide you with easy to follow routes. Alternatively the International Airport at Bordeaux is within easy reach.

Perigueux, the regional capital of the Dordogne is a 20-minute drive away, and other places to visit include Bergerac with its celebrated vineyards, and the ancient town of Sarlat, the city of Limoges with its famous museums of porcelain and enamels.

No visit to the region would be complete without a visit to the pre-historic sites including the famous Lascaux II, and a little further afield, but within an easy day’s visit, the vineyards of Bordeaux, including the town of St. Emillion, the incredible pilgrimage village built into the cliffs at Rocamadour, and the spell-binding monolithic church at Aubeterre, hewn out of solid rock.

Local chateaux include Hautefort, which had a strong connection with the late Queen Mother, Jumilhac, and Bourdeilles.

There are delightful walks through the countryside, through orchards, vineyards and oak forests where in season the celebrated truffle is harvested.

Deposits

Deposit to be paid on booking: £50.00 which is non-returnable.

Balance due six weeks prior to arrival.

Security, cleaning, and breakages deposit to be paid on arrival and refunded at the end of the holiday provided the property is left clean and in good order: £70.00 or 100 Euros by cheque or cash.
