In the south-west of France, hidden away in the glorious Charente countryside, the Château de Charras was originally
built for the Marquis de Charras in the 15th century.

Loving owners have converted the beautiful Château and its estate into a splendid family holiday destination.

Each one has been individually furnished, no two are alike. Guests here share the extensive,
shady grounds and all the facilities on it. Lovely views can be enjoyed from here over the glorious countryside.

Available all year-round, we highly recommend Charras for a relaxing break in this super area.

 

This spacious apartment sleeps 4 plus child/enfant and occupies the right hand side of the first floor of the Chateau. Entrance is through the main Chateau Hall and up the imposing stone staircase, which is a central feature to the Chateau.

The sitting room is large and L - shaped overlooking the central Cour d'honneur to the front and an impressive thirty mile panorama, the gardens and parkland to the back. It boasts one of the best views of any apartment at the Chateau complex. It is stylishly decorated and the proportions of the salon are pleasing, the ceiling is corniced and lit by a central chandelier with a dimmer device, along with wall up lighters. The 3 full-length Georgian windows dressed with silk drapes create an ambiance of light and space, as do the stripped chestnut wood floors. Comfortable window seats provide an excellent excuse to relax and enjoy the view. Furniture includes 2 sofas, a club chair, side tables, dinning table to seat 6, plus chairs, television with some satellite channels (not digital), CD/tape/radio player.

 
 
 

The kitchen with limed oak units leads from the salon and is very well equipped with a dishwasher, cooker, hob, fridge and breakfast bar overlooking the panoramic view to the rear.

The master bedroom is attractively designed with a cherry wood bateau bead, armoire, bedside tables and small desk. There is a stylish tiled en-suite bath/shower room with toilet and cupboard. The second bedroom has twin beds, armoire and there is an additional bath/shower room, with wc and washing machine. There is also a Z bed so an additional child can be accommodated (max 5 in total).

Wooden garden furniture solely for this apartment is placed outside the chateau but can be used anywhere in the extensive grounds.

The park of 13 acres suggests an era of times long gone with avenues of lime trees and plenty of places to stroll or picnic, almost like having your own country estate. Stone balustrades and steps adds to the ambience in this quiet corner of beautiful France.

THE VILLAGE AND SURROUNDING AREA
The village with its 12th century church was once dependent upon the Château, but now supports it with bakery, post office and Bar/restaurant/tabac. The Château is in the protected 'Forêt Nationale' still an undiscovered corner of rustic France. Walking in woods or the nearby arboretum, far off the beaten track, can be a source of solitary delight accompanied only by birdsong: while cycling, canoeing or horse riding provides an unhurried experience for all nature lovers.

With the exception of Provence, the Charente has more hours of sunshine than anywhere in France.

Charras is within easy access of the famous chateaux of the Médoc vineyards, the medieval town of St Émilion and the brandy distilleries of Cognac, where you can visit and see this unique process and sample several styles of cognac.

Even closer just 25 minutes away is historic Angoulême and Brantôme in the Dordogne, both unique and necessitating a visit and then onwards to Bourdeilles and Périgueux with their bell towers, cathedrals and medieval chateaux.

Only 5 kilometres from the Dordogne we feel you will (as many of our past guests do) want to return year after year.
