Comfortable French 19th Century oak timbered 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom holiday farmhouse, sleeps 8-10 in Tollent near Hesdin on Pas de Calais/Somme border in the beautiful Vallée d'Authie.
Close to local shops and village bar/restaurant. Sandy beaches, water theme parks and beautiful countryside within easy drive, ideal base for golf at Le Touquet or exploring WW1 history. It’s an easy 75 minutes drive from Calais – an hour from Boulogne. It’s close to the northern edge of the Forest of Crecy, a 150 sq km forest of oaks and beeches, with deer, wild boar and plenty of birds, particularly owls around.
It is well equipped with TV and a DVD player and CD tape player, fan oven, hob, refrigerator ,washing machine, microwave oven and toaster. It has a wood burning stove, central heating and a well equipped games room with table football, darts and air hockey.
There is a large garden with a sheltered area for table tennis.
Places to Visit
10 minutes away is the town of Auxi le Chateau with its interesting history and market on Saturday. It has a 16th century church and museum.
13 minutes away is Hesdin, boasting a traditional market on Thursday mornings, with many shops and a very good supermarket. Hesdin is very pretty and has a wonderful 16th century church which is usually open in the mornings. The River Canche flows through the town and there are many small bridges and streets around the town centre. The town hall was the home of Charles V's (the Holy Roman Emperor) sister, and has a magnificent bay window. with huge spire and belfry. This overlooks a large picturesque square surrounded by cafés and shops.
Montreuil is well worth a visit, located on top of a hill with old cobbled streets. The main feature is the Citadel and ramparts. The old wall, with a rampart walk surrounds the town, and takes about half an hour to complete with views that are magnificent. It is approximately half an hour from the house. This is the place where Victor Hugo was inspired to write his finest novel 'les Misérables'.
For children there are various theme parks (Bagatelle, Parc de Dennebroeque, Naours) - two and a half hours to EuroDisney, 2 hours to Asterix Parc.
Chateaux, Abbeys, Markets Towns, plenty of museums to visit, and the Aquaclub and Aqualud nearby (big swimming complexes, water chutes, tropical wavepools) plus water sports/sail boarding.
The WW1 battlefields are about an hour away at Beaumont Hamel and Vimy Ridge.Visit the museums at Albert and la Cupole at St Omer.
The beaches of the Cote d'Opal are about half? an hours drive away. Le Crotoy 35 minutes, Quend Plage and Fort Mahon 40 minutes. The beaches are long wide and clean with golden sand.
There are three golf courses in the vicinity for keen golfers, Nampont, Abbeville and Belle Dunes. Many places offer horse riding, Marcanterra down at the coast, Ferme De Moines in the Forest of Crecy.
The house can be a base for birdwatchers, golfers, anglers, bikers and walkers. There is trout fishing nearby in Caumartin, carp live in the lagoons of the Somme and Narvik near Quend Plage, and there is Sea Fishing at Etaples. The Parc de Marquenterre is a world renowned bird reserve.
There are bikes at the house and you can ride through the Forest of Crecy and around the Bay of Somme.
