Villa Marguerite is situated in a peninsula facing the Ile de Re, about 1.5 km from the villages of La Faute sur Mer (ocean side) and L' Aiguillon sur Mer (a traditional fishing port on the estuary side), 10 km South of La Tranche sur Mer, and about 45 km North of the port of La Rochelle by road – 15 km maximum as the crow flies or by sea across the bay.
The area is known as the “Cote de Lumiere” for its sunshine and luminosity.
Our property is on the ocean side of the peninsula, about 100 metres from the 25 km long sandy beaches ( the sea won an award in recent years for its cleanliness), with no road between us and the sea – just a small pine forest. It is situated well back from the road, and is secluded within its own 1 acre wooded land (fenced), but not isolated.
The immediate area surrounding our property is composed of private properties, mostly within similarly large wooded gardens, and is very quiet, yet only about 1.5 km from the villages with all amenities, including street markets, shops (there is a particularly good bakery/patisserie in La Faute-sur-Mer? which sells “real” bread, fresh croissants and delicious cake, all baked on the premises, and of course ice creams), supermarket, cinema, pharmacy, doctors, and of course plenty of restaurants selling sea food and other local delicacies, crepe bars and food to take away.
There are various local sport facilities, including a marina, tennis courts, sailing school at L’Aiguillon-sur-mer, and a golf course about 20 minutes away. There are also many bird and nature reserves (one is at the end of our garden, but not open to the public). Historic towns and buildings, etc. are not far away (Lucon, La Rochelle, for instance) and one can spend a day “Au Puits du Fou”, famous for its historical revival of the Wars of Vendee and local history (“sons et lumieres”) by night and for its fully “inhabited” reconstructed medieval village and craft workshops.
