Galera
The region covering Baza and Huescar is known as The Altiplano. This contrasting district, set in the north east of the province of Granada, sits at over 800 metres above sea level. Its central area, with some impressive desert landscapes, is hemmed in by a ring of mountain ranges. This is where you will find Galera.
Galera is situated in a green valley formed by two rivers that wind their way between hills of a moon-like landscape. In these hills lie the remains of ancient civilizations (argaric sites and Ibero-Roman necropolis of Tutugi). Because of its verdant nature the village has become known as “The Oasis of the High Plateau”
Galera is first and foremost a farming community, followed closely as a rural tourist attraction, well known in Spain but undiscovered by the rest of Europe, recently with the rise in the popularity of modern cave homes the construction industry is booming. The cave homes make ideal environmentally friendly holiday homes that have a tranquil atmosphere where you can unwind from the stresses of modern day life.?
Location
Galera lies in the province of Granada, in the Andalusian part of Southern Spain on the A330, which runs from the excellent A92 dual carriageway running between Granada and Mercia. Galera is about 30 km north of Baza, approx. two and a half hours drive, on very good dual carriageway, from the airports of Malaga and Alicante. There are international airports at Mercia, Almeria and Granada, but charter flights to these airports are less common
Galera also has international recognition for its archaeological sites dating back over 4000 years. Visit the nearby archaeological sites revealing the first human presence in Europe and representing practically all cultures (historical as well as prehistoric) of Mediterranean origin.
Swimming
Galera – Outdoor swimming pool, ideal for diving, depth ranges from 0.7m down to 2.2m, shallow area for small children. Bar available & changing rooms. Only open July and August
At the municipal swimming pool at El Olivar, near Castillejar, just 20 minutes drive from Galera. you can laze by the pool or have a meal and drinks in the bar. The changing rooms and showers are very clean, also there is a Amphitheatre for outdoor concerts.
Castillejar is another interesting town which is steeped in history. (Castillejar is Spanish for a small castle).
If you prefer to swim somewhere unusual why not swim with the fish in the fresh water swimming pool at Huescar. Here you can swim with and feed the fish that live in the pool.
Areas of Natural beauty
Galera is perfectly situated for visiting one of the stunning Sierras in the area? – National parks of Sierra de Baza, Sierra de Castril, Sierra de Cazorla, Sierra de Huétor and Sierra de Sagra.
Maps can be obtained from the local tourist offices (Alojamiento) either in the parks themselves or in the nearby town. All the Sierras are well signposted as they are the main tourist attractions in the area.
The Natural parks are locations of great ecological, scientific and educational value. They have ecosystems that have been little altered by man.
Together they demonstrate an enormous range of geology and climate, from salt flats and dunes to mountain ranges and woods. Within the various protected areas are many facilities for the tourist. Such as marked footpaths,recreation areas, camping sites, mountain bike tracks, visitor centres, viewpoints, observatories, Information points and areas for free camping.?
All the parks are easy to get to and are well signposted – just look for brown road signs.
